A managed service provider (MSP) takes ongoing responsibility for an agreed environment for a monthly fee. An IT consultant delivers a defined project: an assessment, a migration, a deployment, or a transition. Between the two sits pay-as-you-go support: help on request, billed for the time spent.
SyncrionIT provides a monthly IT Support plan priced per device and consulting projects. Other providers set their own scope, staffing, pricing, and terms, so compare their written proposals directly.
Three ways to organize the work
Managed IT fits a need for continuing responsibility: monitoring, patching, endpoint protection, account administration, and day-to-day support for a monthly fee, usually priced per user or per device. The agreement names what is covered.
Pay-as-you-go support fits a business that wants experienced help when something stops working, without a monthly fee. You pay for the time spent, and nobody maintains the environment between requests unless that is separately agreed.
IT consulting fits a defined outcome: assessing an environment, migrating email or files, moving an office, improving a network, tightening identity and device controls, or completing a provider transition. The estimate describes the deliverables, assumptions, responsibilities, and completion criteria.
Compare scope, billing, and responsibility
Start with what you need someone to be responsible for. A lower monthly figure is not a meaningful comparison if two proposals cover different work. The written quote or agreement controls the final scope and terms.
| Consideration | Managed IT (monthly plan) | Pay-as-you-go support | IT consulting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Ongoing responsibility for an agreed environment. | Help when something stops working. | An assessment or a defined change with a handover. |
| Billing basis | A monthly fee, often per user or device. SyncrionIT: $70 per device per month, $280 minimum. | Hourly, for the time spent. | Against a written estimate. SyncrionIT: $125 per hour. |
| Routine upkeep | Usually included for covered systems. | Not included unless separately agreed. | Included only where the project scope requires it. |
| Commitment | A recurring agreement with notice terms. SyncrionIT: month to month. | Usually none beyond each job. | Ends with acceptance and handover. |
What pay-as-you-go support does not cover
Paying only for the time you use is simple, but it means nobody is watching the environment between requests. Updates, alerts, backups, and renewals still need a named owner: someone inside the business or a separate arrangement.
SyncrionIT's monthly IT Support plan covers everyday support, updates, and protection for covered computers after a scoped onboarding project. Larger repairs and changes are quoted as projects.
Choose by the situation in front of you
If updates, alerts, and account administration keep going unowned and nobody inside the business can take them on, a monthly managed plan may be the right fit. If the business mostly needs help when something breaks, pay-as-you-go support usually costs less. If an internal team owns daily operations but needs to migrate a platform or resolve a known infrastructure problem, a consulting project fits.
Whichever model applies, decide who owns routine work after a project ends so the handover does not leave a gap.
- List the systems and people involved.
- Separate recurring responsibilities from one-time changes.
- Identify who will authorize work and validate the result.
- Agree on scheduling, exclusions, communication, and escalation.
- Confirm ownership of accounts, credentials, and documentation.

Common questions
Do I need a monthly plan to hire SyncrionIT?
Not for projects. Projects are estimated and delivered on their own. Ongoing support is the monthly IT Support plan, at $70 per device per month.
Does SyncrionIT's IT Support plan include updates and protection?
Yes. Covered computers are kept updated and protected, with unlimited everyday support. Backups are arranged separately.
Can a project lead into ongoing support?
Yes. A project can end with a documented environment for an internal team, or the business can continue with the monthly IT Support plan. Those are separate decisions.
